Hotel Review: Grana B&B
For a hotel that is consistently listed as a recommended place to stay in Oaxaca City, Grana B&B feels like a hidden gem. From the outside, you wouldn’t even know it was there. A nondescript door with a small sign is the only indication of the hotel. But while it looks modest from the outside, stepping inside transports you into the very essence of Oaxaca. This hotel doesn’t skimp on the details that take a stay from ordinary to extraordinary. Keep reading to learn more.

Hotel Quick Facts 📝
Check-in – ★★★★☆
Staff during check-in were polite and efficient. Our questions were answered and the staff were very flexible with accommodating our requests. It gave me the impression that no request would be too big or too small. We were shown around the main areas of the hotel and given 2 free drink tickets to enjoy during our stay.
Prior to check-in the hotel was very responsive to email and even provided a detailed list of their top recommendations for what to do and where to eat within the city. It proved to be highly useful as we visited a few of their recommendations and were not disappointed!
Location – ★★★★★
The location of this hotel can not be beat. Located in the heart of Centro, you are never more than a 10 minute walk from all of the main attractions. A 3 minute walk gets you to Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca, Santo Domingo, Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca and Museo De La Filatelia MUFI. Within a 10 minute walk, you can be at the zocalo, Museo Textil de Oaxaca, Callejón San Pablo, Mercado Benito Juárez and Mercado 20 de Noviembre. There is an incredible selection of restaurants, bars and cafes within a short walking distance of the hotel as well. Because you are in the centre of town, the area does feel fairly safe. You truly cannot pick a better location in the City of Oaxaca.
Hotel Vibe – ★★★★★
You can live your Oaxacan fantasy at Grana B&B. The hotel itself is a historic residence dating back to the 18th century. The building—known as Casa Navarra—was carefully restored in 2018, blending its original architecture with modern design. Even the name “Grana” is rooted in local history, referencing the cochineal dye that was once one of Oaxaca’s most valuable exports.
The hotel has 15 rooms, and while the hotel was fully booked during our stay, the common areas were often empty, which allowed us to enjoy the atmosphere more intimately. The courtyard is simply stunning and the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Despite its central location, the inner courtyard is very calm and quiet, making it the perfect place to rest after a long day on your feet. In the evenings, incense is lit throughout the space, adding a sensory layer to the atmosphere.
Hotel guests were mostly young travelers, looking to enjoy a beautiful space in a beautiful city. The atmosphere was mostly quiet and respectful.

Rooms – ★★★★☆
There are many different rooms to choose from at Grana B&B. We booked a Junior Suite for 2 nights. The Junior Suites look out onto the street 5 de Mayo. It is my understanding that all rooms will also have windows looking out into the inner courtyard as well. The rooms looking out onto the street can be a bit noisy, however, the hotel provides complimentary ear plugs.
The room itself was beautifully designed and decorated, incorporating many personal touches that you don’t normally see in other hotel rooms. For example, they provide hats and straw bags to use while exploring the streets of Oaxaca. Our room was quite large with lots of space and a comfortable king sized bed. The bathroom was a good size as well and had a walk-in shower and a storage area that included shelving, hangers and the safe. The hotel provides fresh water daily, but coffee and tea are served in the kitchen. Other room amenities included bathrobes, slippers, air conditioning, high quality toiletries, TV and desk workstation. Clearly a lot of thought has been put into these rooms as the hotel cares deeply about the guest experience.

Quality of Sleep – ★★★★☆
The bed struck that just-right balance, slightly firm, yet inviting, with crisp, high-quality linens and soft pillows that made it easy to settle in for the night. As I am a very light sleeper, the main issue I had was noise. There was a lot of noise coming from the street that made it hard to fall asleep. Because the doors and windows facing the inner courtyard aren’t fully sealed, noise from returning guests carries easily into the room. Luckily the guests we had at the time of our stay were mostly quiet and respectful, so this didn’t prove to be too much of an issue. While we were on the main floor, there was no sound transfer from the adjoining room or the room above. Next time I stay here, I will opt for an inner room that does not have a window facing the street for a more quiet experience.
Amenities – ★★★★★
The hotel amenities onsite consist of a rooftop bar, a kitchen with a generous selection of coffee, teas and snacks, complimentary morning yoga classes and bicycle rentals.
The rooftop bar quickly became our go-to in the early evenings, a relaxed spot to settle in and soak up the atmosphere of the city. The bartenders made delicious cocktails, but mezcalitas were our preferred drink of choice.
I highly recommend taking advantage of the complimentary rooftop yoga classes offered several times a week—especially if you don’t have an early start. It’s a peaceful, grounding way to ease into the day in Oaxaca.
Lastly, Grana B&B also offers complimentary bike rentals! We didn’t get the opportunity to take advantage of this offer, but this could be a great way to see more surrounding neighbourhoods of Oaxaca de Juárez outside of Centro.

Service – ★★★★☆
The customer service here is friendly, courteous and they’re happy to help with any request. On the day of our check-out we had a full-day tour from 6am-6pm, which meant we needed to leave our luggage behind for the entire day. The staff gladly took our bags and made it seem like it was no trouble at all, which we really appreciated.
Food / Drink Quality: ★★★★★
The breakfast served at Grana B&B was absolutely divine. Your order is taken the night before and they have a menu of regular items with a special that changes daily. I wish I had stayed longer just to be able to try everything on the menu as it all looked so tempting. Breakfast is served in the courtyard with fresh juices and fruit.
Overall: ★★★★1/2
Grana B&B was the perfect home base for our time spent in Oaxaca de Juárez. The value here is incredible. It’s the small details that add up to something very special. Its perfect location, beautiful interior and friendly service makes it my ultimate recommendation.
